Corporate Image

Most companies spend a considerable amount of money creating their image through advertising and marketing. Signage, business cards, promotional items, print materials and websites are all given careful consideration and approval by the top level managers. However, most companies spend little to no money on their employees' appearances.

The three types of errors regarding the company dress code:

1. The employer gives NO thought at all to the employees' appearances
2. The employer figures they all get it and know what to wear and when
3. The employer places a dress code in the employee manual and figures it will dictate the dress of the employees

If the employees do not know what image the company is portraying and are not given any direction and guidance that this is important to the entire company package, then the employer is leaving image up to the preconceived notions of people from a wide variety of backgrounds as to what is and is not appropriate for that environment.

Think this isn't such a big deal?

Look what happened the summer of '05 at the White House. The girl's lacrosse team was told to look nice for their visit to the White House. The girls took their ideas of what looked nice and several wore flip flops (albeit dressy ones) with their skirts and tops. No one commented on the inappropriateness of the spaghetti strap dresses with no cover up but the flip flops were all over the news. Did they do anything wrong? Arguably, they did what they were told. They "looked nice" by their definition of the term. However, others had a different idea of that concept. Had they been given some additional coaching on what was deemed appropriate, the situation and the media blitz would have been avoided. You certainly don't want this type of controversy for your company which clouds your real message (your product or service).
